Choosing a homeschool curriculum can feel overwhelming. There are a variety of factors to consider when selecting the right curriculum, from finding something that accommodates your schedule to fitting the individual needs of your learner. Plus, there is a wide variety of homeschool curriculum available in todays landscape. With the decisions to be made and the sheer number of options available, it can feel challenging figuring out where to start.
Start with Reflection
When contemplating your preferred method or approach to homeschooling, try to reflect back on your own learning experiences. Drawing from your personal experiences could be an excellent gateway to making decisions about curriculum and methods for teaching your children. What did you enjoy about being a student growing up? Were you homeschooled or public schooled? What would you have changed about your experience as a learner? These are all great questions to help you get started!
Which Method do you Prefer?
There are many different forms of homeschooling from hybrid models, online schooling and even unschooling. Each method offers unique qualities, schedules, and setup, so you'll need to consider what will be most attainable for you and your learner. Probably the most important factor to consider is how your child learns best and leading with that.
Learning Styles
Each child is born with a different learning style, a unique lens in which they explore and process the world around them. Some children may do best with hands-on learning, others may prefer to sit back and observe. Regardless of which learning style a child may have, it must be embraced as they learn. Analyze your child as they play and learn to help formulate lessons that meet their learning style.
Teaching Styles
Similar to the learning style of a child, you will have your own preferred teaching style. You may desire a parent-directed approach, or perhaps you prefer a child-led approach. Trust your instincts as you teach your child and remind yourself that no educator is perfect.
Goals
What goals do you have for your child? Is there anything specific you want them to learn outside of a traditional curriculum, such as life skills like budgeting, cooking, and managing a household? There are so many skills children can learn through homeschooling that are not always replicated in traditional schools. No matter what, be sure to include your learner in this conversation, they might just surprise you with their own goals!
Pricing
Curriculum can widely range in price. While there are many free resources available online, some programs require an annual subscription fee after purchasing. Additionally, if you select more than one type of curriculum, you might need to plan on spending a little bit more. The most important thing is to decide on an attainable budget for your family and find resources that fall in line with your budget.
